On Saturday, September 20, hundreds gathered from right around the Northern NSW and Southern QLD region to Run for Relief. The day was a huge success, with an amazing $10,000 raised by the participants in this year’s run. This figure is likely to rise even further as more runners finalise the collection of their sponsorship money. Not only was a significant amount of money raised to support Burma’s refugees and internally displaced people, but awareness of the current crisis in Burma continues to increase in the local community through events like Run For Relief. This year Burma has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. I recently joined a Facebook group called 'The real disaster in Burma is the government'. Unfortunately this is all too true.
During May we saw one of the largest natural disasters to hit the South-East Asian region in recent times. From the earliest days after the cyclone I was attempting to enter the country. I stood at the visa application window, and despite some creativity, was still unable to gain entry. [
